The dealer told me I could put the tractor into 4wd without depressing the clutch. After reading the manual
it says that "you need to depress the clutch when putting it into 4WD".

I ask this because the manual also says that you should not make turns on dry pavement because it will rapidly wear the tires out. This is significant for me because I mow a hill that turn around at the bottom of on an asphalt drive and it is a pain to clutch the mower off and on to make the turn in two whl drive.

I have done the 2wd to 4wd shift without the clutch with no apparent issue, but I do not want to wreck the tractor doing it.

I beieve it's best to dis-engage the transmission whenever you are changing the gearing of the tractor. The clutch went on my brothers '74 Vega 5 speed, and he drove it for months without a clutch. Wasn't a good idea.

I'm not saying the two issues are exactly the same, but stopping transmission rotaion is a good thing. Theoretically, if you are standing still, the hydrostat isn't turning and engagement is possible. Never the less,I would follow the manual and dis-engage the clutch before switching to and from 4wd. There are reasons why the operators manuals are written the way they are. Many say Kubota is too conservative. I think they have seen more of what happens to their equipment than all of us combined.

Avoid sharp turns in 4wd for sure. Not only will it wear your tires, but it puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain. Try to change your mowing patterns so you can make wide turns. ....

Caution should be had while engaging the four wheel drive but I drive many tractors on some I find that it will engage easily but often is harder to disengage because of driveline wrap. I do recommend slow speeds when engaging the lever so not to harm the gears. ....

If this will always be an issue why don't you consider a hydro trans. I have used these units for 40 plus years with out any problems. Performing such operations as rototilling , Snowblowing , mowing etc. 700hrs. plus on each machine. ....
